Voice Based Searching Patented by Google - May 2, 2006

The evolution of the world wide web is an on-going process that will most likely never end during any of our lifetimes. What would have seemed like science fiction in the 1980s is a now reality, especially how we are able to search the enormous amount of information stored on the internet. But get ready, because it looks like Google is going to dramatically upgrade the usability again.

What if you could speak to a search engine, instead of typing? And what if you were able to do so without any speech recognition software install on your system?  What if your company's website could be pulled up just by having a user say your company's name? Google is about to make this a reality.

In April 2006, Google just received a patent for “a voice interface for search engines.” Patent number 7,027,987, which you can read in its entirety here (English). The patent is described as "a system [that] provides search results from a voice search query. The system receives a voice search query from a user, derives one or more recognition hypotheses, each being associated with a weight, from the voice search query, and constructs a weighted Boolean
query using the recognition hypotheses. The system then provides the results of the search system to a user.”

What this really means is that the search engine listens to your request, processes it, and returns results like traditional search engines, except it can listen to you. Currently, the Google voice activated search engine “can return the correct transcription of a spoken query among its top 10 hypotheses about 60% of the time.” While 60% is not the greatest, this is just alpha technology and later versions will definitely be more reliable.

What this could mean for the future of Search Engine Marketing is the opening of an entire new market for businesses. It would be ideal for mobile phone users to be able to search on their internet-savvy phones, bringing SEM to the cellular world. A Piper Jaffray research report indicated that the market for mobile search would reach $11 billion by 2008. This will be a huge market share search engines and companies cannot ignore.

Pago Por Clic Mexico always keeps on the forefront of new technologies, and we will be positioned to take advantage of this new tool when it is available. But why wait, find out what we can do for you today!
